Practice worksheets for Preparatory School - 6. Varna/Matra

This is the sixth and the last post in the series of practice worksheets for little ones. They have to identify the image and match the correct word with it.

They can complete it in a play-way method sitting in groups. This can be just a revision to test how well they have understood matras, varna (swar/vyanjan).

I hope these worksheets are helpful for your kids. If you are visiting or following my blog then leave a comment as feedback and follow my blog.

Practice worksheets for Preparatory School - 5. Varna/Matra

This is the fifth post in the series of the practice worksheets for the kids to test how well they have understood the concept of matras, Swar (Vowels) and consonants (Vyanjan).

The use of correct varna (alphabet) and the matra is very significant in learning the Hindi language. At times the incorrect use of alphabets or matra, not only changes the word but also the meaning. e.g.

                                   साथ - along/ with      सात  - seven (number)

ओर - side                  और - and

                                   दिन - day                   दीन - poor

                                   गदा -  mace                गधा -  donkey

Reading stories and conversations in Hindi helps a lot to overcome such mistakes.

Practice worksheets for Preparatory School - 4. Varna/Matra

This is the fourth post in the series of the practice worksheets for the kids to test how well they have understood the concept of matras, Swar (Vowels) and consonants (Vyanjan).

The group activity for these types of tests is advised and also help them to recapitulate what they have learnt so far.

In this set of worksheets, kids have to identify the image and the matra on the vyanjan (consonant). Kids love colouring so after or before starting the worksheets they can enjoy colouring the images.

Help them to identify the image and the correct pronunciation. It would also increase their vocabulary and pronunciation.

Practice worksheets for Preparatory School - 3. Varna/Matra

This is the third post in the series of the practice worksheets for the kids to test how well they have understood the concept of matras, Swar (Vowels) and consonants (Vyanjan).

The group activity for these types of tests is advised and help them to recapitulate what they have learnt so far.

In this set of practice worksheets encourage them to identify the image, pronounce it and then choose the correct sign/matra.

As I've always stressed one point is that Hindi is highly phonetic and the pronunciation of any Hindi word can be reliably predicted from their written form which is in strong contrast to English.

At times I've observed that when Hindi words are spoken with incorrect pronunciation then we tend to make mistakes in the written form. Many new words have been included in Hindi and one can not say that they are wrong e.g.-

चाभी/चाबी   (originally the first term is correct but the second version is also accepted)

Practice worksheets for Preparatory School - 2. Varna/Matra

This is the second post in the series of practice worksheets to test the progress of young ones to understand how well they have understood the concept of Hindi vowels (Swar) and Consonants (Vyanjans).

It’s always better to test their knowledge in a play-way
method. So settle them in small groups and help them to recapitulate what they have learnt, then start with the Practice sheets.

Encourage them to identify the picture and pronounce the names, then write the correct alphabet/varna under it. The second step is to arrange the alphabets in the correct order.

In the last two worksheets, the Swar and Vyanjan have to be sorted out after identifying the alphabets and to be written in the correct order.

If you are visiting or following my blog and feel that the worksheets are useful for your kids, please leave a comment. I would love to have feedback. Happy teaching !!!

Reading Hindi with IPA symbols - Preparatory/Primary school - i, [ɪ] / ī, [i:]

In this post, I have reading matter of  i, [ɪ] इ / ī, [i:] ई  Matra words and sentences with IPA symbols to help the non-Hindi speakers. Many subscribers earlier had requested this particular topic to help them teach their English speaking kids.

It is important to be able to distinguish between short and long vowels for correct pronunciation because these vowels, in combination with consonants, are used to form words.

         - i/ [ɪ] is short i  in ill, it, inn. (short vowel)

           - ee/ [i:] as sound of  long ee  in feet, esteem

                                                            (Long vowel)

·       It is noteworthy that many consonants which are part of the Hindi language do not exist in English. ड़/ढ़ are difficult to pronounce in English.

·       Following consonants with a नुक्ता (dot) under the alphabet is part of Urdu and Persian words. eg. क़लाम, ख़ान, ग़ैर जहाज़, ज़ीरा, फ़नकार

   क़    ख़    ग़   ज़    फ़   ड़      ढ़

         [q]     [x]      [ɣ]     [z]      [f]     [ɽ]    [ɽʱ]    (IPL)

The difference between nasal- अनुस्वार (अं ) and semi nasal -अनुनासिक (अँ ).

This blog post is on request to explain the difference between nasal- अनुस्वार (अं ) and semi nasal -अनुनासिक (अँ ).

To start with, अनुस्वार (अं ) is a varna/alphabet whereas अनुनासिक (अँ) is a semi nasal sound (matra/sound).

अनुस्वार (अं ) is taught to students when Swar (अ,आ,इ,ई.........अं,अ:) is introduced.

While teaching Hindi, we tell kids matra of अनुस्वार (अं ) is बिंदु (dot) while अनुनासिक (अँ) is चंद्रबिंदु (meaning moon dot in Sanskrit)

I have uploaded three worksheets explaining these two terms with examples. I hope it clears your doubts. Please feel free to get in touch in case of further queries.

Happy teaching!!!!!

How to differenciate the pronounciation of words with the matra of इ/ई and उ/ऊ

I have been requested to describe how to differentiate the pronunciation of words with the matra of / and /.

As we all know that Hindi is a phonetic language. It is important to be able to distinguish between short and long vowels for correct pronunciation because these vowels, in combination with consonants are used to form words.

·       The sound of - i/ [ɪ] is short i  in ill, it, inn.

                                                      ( Short vowel)

           दिन       -   d̪ɪnə /din(a)

           दि         -  d̪ɪlə /dil(a)

          किया       -  t̪əja: / takiyaa

·             - ee/ [i:] as sound of  long ee  in feet, esteem

                                                           (Long vowel)

          तीर         -  t̪i:ɾə /teer(a)

          मछली        - mətʃʰəli: /machalee

         सिपाही        - sɪpa:ɦi: /sipaahee

·       The matra of उ / ऊ is placed at the bottom of the alphabet.

        e.g. – उ - कु, चु, टु ... / ऊ - कू, चू, टू ...

·       The sound of उ - u /[ʊ] as sound of short "u" in put, push, pull

                                                                                     ( Short vowel)

         पुल       -       lə /pul(a)

         सु        -    i: /suee

         छु  -     tʃʰʊa:/ kachuaa

·       The sound of - oo/ [u:] as sound of long "u/oo” in

       soon, spoon, foo(Long vowel)

                        फूल       -   pʰʊlə /phool(a)

                   तूफ़ान      - t̪u:fa:nə /toofaan(a)

                   जू      - kʰədʒʊ:ɾə/ khajoor(a)

                   खुशबू      -  kʰʊʃəbu: /khushaboo

·       While with the alphabet   matra of उ / ऊ  is marked like रु/रू.

                   रुमाल          -   (र् + उ = रु) - ɾʊma:lə /rumaal(a)

                                                        ( Short  vowel)

                रूप       - (र् + ऊ = रू)  - ɾu:pə /roop(a)

                                                                       (Long vowel)

Last but not the least, the use of की/कि.

Ø की is the Possessive Case(कारक), which shows the relation of Noun/Pronoun to some other word in a sentence.

         Ram’s book.      राम की किताब

Ø कि is conjunction(समुच्चयबोधक) which connects two phrases or clauses.

Ram said that he lost his book.

राम ने कहा कि उसकी किताब खो गई।

I hope this post has been helpful in clearing the doubts regarding the pronunciation of words with the matra of / and /.
